“Samuel Dubhloach Payne!” Maggie yelled.

A deep laugh shook Samuel, and his emerald eyes winked with delight as he held his petite mother over his head.

“Sam, put your mother down,” Finn said, suppressing his laughter.

Samuel threw his mother into the air, caught her, and placed her gently on the yellowed linoleum floor as she screamed in delighted terror.

“Sam, I swear,” Maggie began as she wiped sweaty palms on her white apron,” One day, you’re going to drop me right on my head. And then what?”

Samuel bowed his head, looking contrite.

“I would never let you fall,” he said.

Maggie looked into her son’s kind eyes and ruffled his ebony hair. He smiled broadly and winked at her.

“You…you, heathen!” Maggie said as she playfully punched his shoulder.
