I was a sophomore in high school when I wrote this poem.

The children met in the Land of Dreams
Happy and innocent, they joined hands
Formed a circle,
Made a silent promise to hold on to their dreams
The first line of their childish chant began
In loud, joyful voices.

Ring around the rosies…

A tall man with a scowl upon his withered face,
Thrust the burden of responsibility
Upon their tiny shoulders
Forcing a few to grow up too quickly
And forget their fragile dreams.

The man’s name is Maturity.

Pocket full of posies…

A beautiful girl with long flowing hair
And snake-like eyes
Used honeyed words as her tool,
And slithered into a few of the children’s hearts
Causing them to lose faith in themselves
Abandoning the Land of Dreams.
